Child Line 1098

    Introduction

    The Government of India launched CHILDLINE Service during the year 1998-99. The CHILDLINE is a 24 hours free phone service, which can be accessed by a child in distress on his behalf by dialing the number 1098 on telephone/mobile. CHILDLINE provides emergency assistance to a child and subsequently based upon the child’s need, the child is referred to an appropriate organisation for long-term follow up and care.

    CHILDLINE stands for a friendly ‘DIDI’ or a sympathetic ‘BHAIYA’ who is always there for vulnerable children 24 hours of the day, 365 days of the year.

    CHILDLINE is a platform which brings together the Ministry for Women & Child Development, Government of India, Department of Telecommunications, street and community youth, non-profit organisations, academic institutions, the corporate sector and concerned individuals. CHILDLINE work for the protection of the rights of all children in general. But our special focus is on all children in need of care and protection, especially the more vulnerable sections, which include:

  • Street children and youth living alone on streets
  • Child labourers working in the unorganised and organised sectors
  • Domestic help, especially girl domestics
  • Children affected by physical/sexual/emotional abuse in family, schools or institutions
  • Children who need emotional support and guidance
  • Children of commercial sex workers
  • Child victims of the flesh trade
  • Victims of child trafficking
  • Children abandoned by parents or guardians
  • Missing children
  • Run away children
  • Children who are victims of substance abuse
  • Differently-abled children
  • Children in conflict with the law
  • Children in institutions
  • Mentally challenged children
  • HIV/AIDS infected children
  • Children affected by conflict and disaster
  • Child political refugees
  • Children whose families are in crises

    Objective

  • To reach out to every child in need of care and protection by responding to emergency on 1098
  • Awareness about CHILDLINE amongst every Indian child
  • To provide a platform to networking amongst allied system to provide linkages to support system that facilitates the rehabilitation of children in need of care and protection
  • To work together with allied system to create child-friendly system
  • To advocate services for children those are inaccessible for non-existent
  • To contribute and work towards strengthening and participation in a global movement that addresses issues related to child protection and ensure that children’s voices are heard

    CUTS Centre for Human Development is running CHILDLINE service as a collaborative organization for urban model and also working in rural area of Bhilwara district

  • Achievements

    CHILDLINE have received care & protection related 2527 cases through toll-free number 1098 from July 2012 to August 2017. CHILDLINE provided assistant to children from concern departments as well as allied system. 2476 cases have been closed after successful case intervention, remaining cases follow-ups is on going.
